Nowadays, more and more parents are morewilling to put their children in international school since kindergarden.Parents want children start to pick up English as early as possible.Particularily, in some expensive international schools, there are foreignhomeroom teachers so that children can have a pure English environment atschool. Is it always good for children to learn a second language when they aresuper young? Personally speaking, the answer to the question is that it dependson the child’s situation.

There was a 5 years old Japanese boy Tomcame to the international kindergarden I used to work at. He was an active boyand he was coming to China for a year because of his dad’s company arrangement.He didn’t go to an international school when he was in Japan. He gotincreditable stress when he was in the new school. He needed to learn Chineseand English at the same time. He was always acting out in Chinese lesson andcaused many troubles for the Chinese language teacher. Teachers talked to hisparents several times and finally got his parents’ permission to drop Chineselesson. Parents insisted to put their son in Chinese lesson at firstbecause they thought it would be a nice environment for the little boy to learnChinese in China. However, Tom’s teachers all believed that learning Chinesewas the trigger to his misbehavior. In addition, he was picking up his Englishwhile he was sitting in his homeroom. Making him learn a third language isputting too much stress to him. After dropping Chinese lesson, Tom became ahappy boy and got very well with his peers. When the family was leaving afterone year, they all felt happy about Tom’s growth in the kindergarten.


Parents always has the eager to help theirchildren earn more and more skills. There is no doubt that a multilingualperson can be more competitive. A bilingual (Chinese and English) speaker canget a job which requires fluency in English. However, if learning a newlanguage is adding more and more stress to a child. Parents need to considerwhether or not continue the lesson. Young children need times to play and builda happy childhood. Adults should not give too much pressure on making them tolearn a new language. Parents can start to let children to pick up a secondlanguage by using the picture book, but not forcing them to buildtheir vocabulary.
